Foreign and
Commonwealth Office of the United KingdomForeign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom

The purpose of the FCO is to advance UK interests in a safe, just and prosperous world. The FCO employs some 16,000 staff, based both in the UK and in an overseas network of over 200 diplomatic offices.

The FCO is committed to engaging with the Islamic world, work that cuts across several of the Office’s strategic priorities, including promoting sustainable development, underpinned by democracy, good government and human rights, and counter-terrorism. The mission of the FCO’s engagement with the Islamic world is three-fold:

  • (i) to build better mutual understanding between Muslim and non-Muslim countries and communities in order to strengthen shared values;
  • (ii) to help prevent radicalization, particularly among young Muslims in the UK and overseas; and
  • (iii) to build a closer relationship with British Muslims on foreign policy in order to increase mutual understanding.
